Ishant Sharma, the most experienced fast bowler of the Indian team, suffered an ankle injury during a Ranji Trophy match, which has clouded doubt over his availability for the New Zealand tour. Ishant was injured in the fifth over of Vidarbha's second innings on Monday while leading the Delhi bowling attack. India will play two Test matches from New Zealand from 21 to 25 February and from 29 February to 4 March in New Zealand.
A senior member of Delhi Team Prabandhan said on condition of anonymity on Tuesday, "Ishant's MRI report has arrived. Luck is good that his ankle has not fractured. He will leave for NCA when he is in a good running position. There were reports that Ishant had a third-level injury that could cause him to be out of the match for a month. The BCCI will confirm this after examining itself.
A BCCI source said, "BCCI has a standard operating procedure and we will do an MRI again to ascertain the severity of the injury and decide on its rehabilitation." The BCCI hopes that Ishant will be fit for the first Test on time. If this bowler who plays 96 Tests for India is not fit on time, then Navdeep Saini can be included in his team.
